UNIQLO is advancing workplace inclusivity in Malaysia through a partnership with Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia. This initiative is designed to provide employees with the training and resources they need to better support individuals with disabilities, creating an environment where everyone—both staff and customers—feels included.
EAP Malaysia, a center focused on autism, uses Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to deliver tailored programs for individuals on the autism spectrum. Since last December, EAP has been conducting specialized training for UNIQLO employees to help them engage more effectively with customers and colleagues who have disabilities.
Evelyn Tan, Director of Legal and Sustainability at UNIQLO Malaysia, shared details of the partnership and its potential impact on the disabled community.
Specialized Training for Managers
Tan explained that the partnership’s primary goal is to provide store managers with ongoing training to help them develop the skills needed to interact with people with disabilities effectively.
“Our aim is to give our employees the tools to foster an inclusive atmosphere that benefits both employees and customers,” Tan said. She also noted that UNIQLO seeks to set a new standard for accessibility in the retail sector.
Currently, UNIQLO Malaysia employs 27 individuals with disabilities at 27 different locations across the country, with plans to expand as the company grows.
Empowering Employees with Knowledge
The training provided by EAP is designed to equip employees with the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with individuals with disabilities. It also raises awareness and provides practical strategies for creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace.
Tan said, “The training helps our employees build confidence, enabling them to adapt to different situations and provide tailored service to each customer’s unique needs.”
Jochebed Isaacs, Director of EAP Malaysia, explained that the training focuses on practical communication techniques, accessibility considerations, and creating a supportive workplace environment.
Enhancing Accessibility in Stores
In addition to training, UNIQLO has made improvements to its stores to increase accessibility. For example, the Damansara Avenue Square outlet has features like universal fitting rooms, wheelchair-accessible facilities, and designated parking spaces for individuals with disabilities.
However, Tan emphasized that inclusivity extends beyond physical accessibility. “It’s about creating a culture where everyone feels valued and respected, whether they are customers or employees,” she stated.
Inclusive Hiring Practices
UNIQLO Malaysia is dedicated to offering equal employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities. The company doesn’t impose strict limits based on the severity of disabilities but instead focuses on hiring individuals who can perform their tasks with reasonable accommodations.
Tan mentioned that employees with disabilities are offered the same pay, benefits, and opportunities for career growth as other employees. The company also provides job coaching and other tailored support to ensure that all employees can thrive in their roles.
Expanding Initiatives for Disabled Employment
To further support individuals with autism in the workforce, UNIQLO has partnered with Enabling Academy (EA), a project by Gamuda Berhad that helps adults with autism transition into the workforce.
As part of this collaboration, UNIQLO offers a Retail Training Course that combines classroom learning with in-store training. The course is led by employees with disabilities, who share their experiences and insights with trainees.
Several graduates from the EA program have already been successfully hired by UNIQLO, and Tan confirmed that the company is committed to continuing the program. She also mentioned that UNIQLO is open to further partnerships with other organizations to create more opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
